The Systems Engineer will direct the activities of the operations staff in the performance of day-to-day responsibilities of the Systems Operations Department.  Assist in the development of objectives for systems operators, performance evaluation and development plans.  The Systems Engineer will also oversee and actively participate in the monitoring and operation of all ACS AS400 computer systems. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for all phases of computer operations.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Directs and develops project plans for initiatives undertaken in development of the AS400 Support function.
  • May direct or act as a Project Manager for initiatives within the AS400 Support function.
  • Provides point of escalation for issues affecting the smooth running of the Systems Operations Department of various nature (e.g. personnel, scheduling, technical).
  • Enforces rules relating to documented operational policies and procedures used by the staff in accomplishing their daily tasks.
  • Provides support and backup for Enterprise Change Management tasks executed by the Senior Systems Operator
  • Informs the Systems Operations Manager of any issues that may impact the daily production flow, also any issues that may or will affect the ACS user community.
  • Ensures that all issues affecting the users are addressed and brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
  • Determines the status of the system being operated.
  • Checks for error messages and takes corrective actions.
  • Oversees handling of complex problems or events that might occur in the operations of the AS/400 systems and act as second level escalation point for less experienced operations staff.
  • Oversees the monitoring of activities for system’s vital statistics such as Response time, Memory usage, Auxiliary Storage usage, Problem logs, all required subsystems are active and operating normally, all communication Interfaces are active, and all supporting peripheral devices active.
  • Oversees the general operator functions such as:
    • Oversight and/or performance of backup and restore of files.
    • Oversight and/or performance of system storage management procedures.
    • Oversight and/or performance of daily production schedules.
  • Oversees and directs participation in the performance of moderate to complex systems administration tasks such as:
  • Application of Operating System patches (PTF) and upgrades as required.
    • Implementation and configuration of tested subsystems.
    • Configuration of networking services.
    • Installation, configuration and testing of hardware and software.
  • Develops and maintains internal procedures and standards manuals as well as training material supporting the development of operations staff.
  • Occasionally assist with other aspects of the Company’s business, such as Customer Assistance, when requested.
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgement in the performance of monitoring/operating all computer systems.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Working knowledge of a call center environment is preferred.  Advanced working knowledge of operating systems, hardware, and software including but not limited to AS/400 and related equipment, Windows workstation and server, TCP/IP networking and 3270/5250 terminal emulation services is a must.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to varied system conditions. To understand warning messages potential error situations and respond in a logical intelligent manner.
  • Effective written communication skills are necessary in order to produce management as well as internal reports and execution of supervisory responsibilities.
  • Proven Project Management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with computer users, systems operators and all levels of company management.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and follow up with assigned tasks essential. 
  • Experience in working with development methodologies with advanced knowledge of change management objectives and procedures.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft Project and Windows NT operating system.
  • Working knowledge of Data and Voice networking concepts, Windows networking, Voice Response Unit technology, Data Mirror iCluster, Connect:Direct 400, and IBM Backup Recovery and Media Services is a plus.

 

Education & Work Experience:

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college is required; BA or BS from accredited four year college or University a plus; IS major preferred.
  • Two to four years of systems operations experience is required.
